Our Story
Since 1978, Alii Nui Sailing Charters has been proudly sailing the seas of Maui, whisking guests away on exhilarating snorkeling trips, romantic sunset cruises, and everything in between. We’re honored to play a part in introducing our visitors to the island and its waters; as stewards of our proud culture, we take that responsibility seriously.

1978
Maui Dive Shop opens its first retail location, focusing on SCUBA diving and retail
1987
First dive and snorkel boat is launched out of the Kihei boat ramp.
1990
Gulf War causes dramatic drop in tourism, forcing downsize in operations.
2003
Original Alii Nui catamaran purchased and outfitted for high-end snorkeling and sunset sails.
2007
Brand-new Alii Nui “built by hand, from scratch” in Oregon with the goal of luxury snorkeling and sunset dinner sails.
2009
The new-and-improved, 65-feet-long, 35-feet-wide Alii Nui is completed after two years of construction and transported from Portland Oregon, enduring 12-foot seas and chasing Tropical Storm Felicia to arrive in Maui’s Ma’alaea Harbor.
2012
Alii Nui launches the first Royal Feast Dinner Sail, providing the ultimate on-water dining experience.
2023
RED Hospitality & Leisure acquires Maui Dive Shop & Alii Nui Sailing Charters. RED’S specialization in resort services, ecotourism, and destination services for luxury hotels promises a new horizon for Alii Nui, with plans for strategic expansion in the future.
2024
Introduced the Alii Kai, custom-built in Louisiana and designed for high-end hospitality service, featuring an onboard grill, induction cooktops, a premium Top Deck, and more.
2024
Welcome Alii Nani, a Boston 350 Realm from Newport Beach, crafted for exclusive six-passenger private charters, featuring luxurious seating, advanced navigation, and premium amenities.
Ecotourism & Outreach
True to the spirit of Aloha that guides us, our relationship to nature is sacred. Since the founding of Maui Dive Shop in 1978, we’ve taken responsibility for our earth—and its resources—seriously. Our team strives to reduce its impact on the delicate ecosystems that border the island of Maui and the environment, focusing on Malama Kai (to take care of the ocean).
We believe in promoting positive ecological practices in the following areas

Ali’i Nui and Maui Dive Shop Dive stay responsible by:
•Pumping all waste at the dock and do not deposit waste in the ocean
•Not using fish food to promote animal encounters
•Our caterer uses local produce and products to support our local farmers and vendors
•Using purified water for drinking, which is provided by a local Maui company
•Picking up “ocean trash” throughout our daily charters
•Reusable dishes, plates, silverware, coffee mugs, champagne and wine glasses
•As a sailing catamaran, we use less fuel than motor-powered vessels
